Set up a Home Command Center
Every busy family needs a Home Command Center that supports planning and scheduling and contains important family information. Locate the Home Command Center in a central location like the kitchen or an area by the most-used access door. Include the following items in your Home Command Center.
- Dry-erase calendar (unless all family members are on shared electronic calendars) that shows the family’s schedule for the week or month
- Important information about the children that can be quickly and easily accessed – shot records, school contact information, lunch menus, carpool numbers, emergency contacts, babysitters, etc.
- Inbox for school papers that need to be signed or reviewed
Use a Family Calendar
Record all family activities and obligations on a large calendar. The family’s calendar can be on the dry erase board where everyone can easily see it or if your family is high-tech, shared electronic calendars will work, too. Keep the calendar current and live by the calendar and you will will prevent missed appointments and potential conflicts.
Have Weekly Family Meetings
Weekly family meetings are a great way to discuss the scheduling, activities and responsibilities for the week. The meetings encourage participation by all family members so there is buy-in to the planned week.
